Browse Environment Impact Statement - Woodside
I'm writing to raise my concerns about Woodside Energy’s proposed Browse to North West Shelf gas project. Woodside has just submitted its Environment Impact Statement (EIS) for Browse, meaning that Minister for the Environment and Water Tanya Plibersek will soon review the project. I would like you to raise this issue with the Minister as soon as possible and request that she does not accept the EIS. Browse would be a nightmare for our climate and the environment. It is the next phase of Woodside’s Burrup Hub gas project – the most climate polluting fossil fuel proposal in Australia today. Browse would add 1.6 billion tonnes of greenhouse gasses, and Woodside would drill over 50 wells to extract gas from under Scott Reef, Australia’s largest standalone offshore coral reef. All this activity would put critical habitat for sea turtles and rare pygmy blue whales at risk. After a historic election in which people voted overwhelmingly for climate action and a clean energy future, approving Browse – which would operate until around 2070 – runs contrary to Australia’s ambition to reach net zero emissions by 2050. So please, raise this issue with Minister Plibersek as soon as possible and ask her to not accept Woodside’s Browse EIS.
