Victorians, share your bushfire story

In the wake of this summer’s devastating bushfires, the Victorian Government has launched an inquiry. The inquiry will investigate the underlying causes that made the fires so severe and so intense. Just as importantly, it will look into how we can prepare to stop future fire seasons from getting worse.

In the wake of this summer’s devastating bushfires, the Victorian Government has launched an inquiry. The inquiry will investigate the underlying causes that made the fires so severe and so intense. Just as importantly, it will look into how we can prepare to stop future fire seasons from getting worse.

This is your opportunity to make your voice heard!

We have a chance to speak up and contribute to the healing of our bushfire impacted communities. The Victorian Bushfire Inquiry is just around the corner and they want to hear from you. Write a submission today to share your story and let our politicians know that we need better climate policies to prevent future fires.

Here are some tips:

  • Introduce yourself, say where you live and what you do e.g. are you a farmer, local business owner, emergency services worker, retiree etc?
  • Share your own experiences. Were you or your friends and family impacted by the bushfires or smoke, and how? How did the bushfires make you feel? How do you feel about the future if the climate crisis worsens?
  • Say what you want them to do - make some recommendations about the sort of climate policies you want to see.

And here are some key facts you could use (remember to put them in your own words):

  • Last summer’s bushfires burnt 19.4 million hectares of land across Australia, killed over a billion animals, and led to 35 tragic deaths of people from fire and over 400 more from smoke exposure.
  • Scientists say last summer's fire conditions were made more severe because of climate change and severe fires seasons will be 4-8 times more likely in future if we don't do more for the climate.
