A call to Tanya Plibersek and the WA state government to reject Woodside's Burrup Hub
I am writing to you regarding Woodside’s plan to drill for gas at Scott Reef, off the coast of Western Australia. I am very concerned about the impact that Woodside’s plans would have on Australia’s marine wildlife, such as green sea turtles and pygmy blue whales, which the EPBC Act classifies as ‘vulnerable’ and ‘endangered’ respectively. I am also concerned about the billions of tonnes of climate pollution produced when the gas is burned. The WA EPA has said the impacts to Scott Reef and its marine life would be profound and unacceptable. It is impossible to build an oil and gas industrial zone over a pristine coral reef system without having profound and unacceptable impacts. Since the 1980s, the WA EPA has assessed 100 oil and gas proposals and recommended against only two – one at Ningaloo and the other at Barrow Island. The EPA’s opinion must be respected, and Browse must be rejected to protect this incredibly special place. I understand that you are currently reviewing two connected components of Woodside’s Burrup Hub - the development of the Browse offshore gas field, which would include up to 50 new gas wells around Scott Reef, and the extension of the North West Shelf (NWS) onshore gas facility to 2070, where the gas from Browse would be processed. I ask that you please not approve these two proposals, and safeguard the future of marine life at and around Scott Reef. These are two of the most important decisions that Labor will make on nature and the climate before the next election.
