My submission to the Gas Market Review Consultation
To whom it may concern. I am writing to make a formal submission to the Gas Market Review consultation and provide feedback on its proposed implementation. I support the government’s intention to reform the gas market and rein in gas exports, because clearly our system is broken. Gas exports have caused Australian gas prices to triple and electricity prices to double. It’s not fair that corporations have been raking in huge profits from exporting 80% of our gas overseas, while regular people can’t pay their energy bills. However, reforms to the gas market must also align with Australia’s international climate commitments to limit warming to 1.5C, which means they must not incentivise any new domestic supply. We have enough gas to meet our existing needs by redirecting exports. The gas exported in the past five years alone could have supplied Australia’s decreasing domestic demand for more than 20 years. There is a mountain of scientific evidence demonstrating that gas expansion is out of step with the Paris Agreement goal. The International Energy Agency’s landmark Net Zero by 2050 report concluded that no new investment in oil, gas or coal is needed to reach net zero by 2050, and reaching net zero is essential to limit global warming to 1.5C. The IEA has also stated that global gas demand needs to begin declining now to achieve the required 40% to 80% reduction by 2050 to achieve net zero, and countries like Australia should reduce emissions faster. On that basis, the Australian Government should prioritise policies which meet the domestic gas needs of Australia from existing sources, on the pathway to a phase out of gas and all fossil fuels. Having recently signed the Belém declaration to transition away from fossil fuels, the Government must now prove that its domestic policy matches its international rhetoric. To deliver genuine cost-of-living relief and honour our international climate commitments, the reforms must: - Redirect gas exports not increase gas production - Integrate gas demand reduction and electrification into the policy to support the transition to cheap, clean renewable energy - Rule out subsidies for the gas industry or any weakening of regulation to fast-track gas projects - Form part of a plan to phase out gas Thank you for your consideration,
