Safeguard Mechanism - Woodside
I'm writing to raise my concerns about the Federal Government’s proposed policy to regulate corporate climate polluters - the Safeguard Mechanism. The Federal Government’s proposed reforms to the Safeguard Mechanism are too weak, and will not be effective in reducing emissions from our biggest climate polluters, like Woodside, Chevron and Ampol. I would like you to raise this issue with Minister Bowen and request that he significantly strengthen the policy to make it fit for purpose - bringing down emissions from Australia’s most polluting companies. We need a much stronger Safeguard Mechanism that: - requires new entrants to have net zero emissions from day one - heavily restricts the use of dodgy carbon offsets, and - ensures that Australian taxpayers do not have to subsidise coal and gas companies to reduce their emissions. Coal and gas companies got us into this mess, Australians should not pay to bail them out of it. A strong policy would put the brakes on dirty new fossil fuel projects – like Woodside’s proposed Burrup Hub gas project in Western Australia. Under current rules, the Burrup Hub alone could wipe out a large share of the Safeguard Mechanism’s emissions budget. After a historic election in which people voted overwhelmingly for climate action and a clean energy future, it is essential that our politicians stand up to big polluters like Woodside and ensure they are doing their fair share of emissions reduction. So please, raise this issue with Minister Bowen as soon as possible and ask him to put in place fair, effective climate policy.
